There are plenty of places we love for dinner in town, but for lunch? Le Fat Poodle is one of those spots we could happily be at every week — and often wish we were. It’s the kind of restaurant that turns a regular weekday into a little celebration, where a “quick bite” somehow stretches into an afternoon.
Tucked in the heart of Old Greenwich, Le Fat Poodle is part of the restaurant family of Chef Anshu Vidyarthi, who also helms Juju Cantina and Siren nearby, plus Le Penguin downtown. Each has its own personality, but the Poodle has carved out its own niche — lively, unpretentious, and just the right mix of French bistro spirit and neighborhood hangout.
The Magic of the Paillard
If we could only order one dish here forever, it might just be the chicken paillard. Somehow, they get the chicken pounded impossibly thin — we still don’t know how they do it, but maybe that’s part of the magic. Lightly charred, perfectly seasoned, and topped with a simple salad, it’s fresh, bright, and satisfying without ever feeling heavy. It’s the kind of plate that makes you think, “why don’t I eat this every day?”
A Roll to Truffle With
Lobster rolls are everywhere in New England, but this one deserves a spot on the forever food bucket list. Rich lobster, a toasted buttered brioche roll, crisp bacon, and a tangy cole slaw salad — plus just the right touch of truffle. Decadent without being over the top, it’s a little indulgent, a lot delicious, and exactly the kind of thing you want to order when you’re in the mood for a splurge.
Oysters, Tuna, and Other Favorites
There’s almost always a great oyster special at Le Fat Poodle — and the blue kumamotos are a favorite. Briny, clean, and best enjoyed with a glass of sparkling rosé. If oysters aren’t your thing, keep an eye out for rotating seafood specials — the salmon dishes are always standouts, and the wicked tuna tartare is a crowd pleaser every single time.
Drinks & Atmosphere
While we almost always reach for their sparkling rosé at lunch, the cocktail list is creative and well worth exploring. Expect light, refreshing spritzes and seasonal flavors that pair perfectly with the menu. The vibe inside is lively and welcoming, with bursts of music when someone’s celebrating a birthday (yes, the whole restaurant joins in). In warmer months, the outdoor tables are great, but we love the energy indoors, where it always feels like something is happening.
Save Room for Dessert
We’ll always recommend saving room for dessert here. The chocolate mousse is a house signature — rich, velvety, and worth every bite. The key lime tarte is equally hard to pass up, perfectly tart with a buttery crust. And if you’re lucky, there might be a macaron special on offer — one of those small delights that feels like a sweet surprise at the end of the meal.
Le Fat Poodle isn’t trying to be the fanciest restaurant in town (but we’re still always doing a fit check before heading there), and that’s exactly why we love it. It’s fun, reliable, and just a little indulgent — the kind of place that keeps locals coming back and visitors wishing they had one at home. Lunch here never disappoints.
And we haven’t even talked about their dinners — casual, elegant date nights at their finest — or their festive brunches. But that’s for another day…
