Watching movies under the stars is one of the joys of summer time entertainment. Add the backdrop of a seaside Newport mansion and you have a night that is perfect for family fun or a cozy date for two.
The newportFILM is a year-round, non-profit documentary film series in Newport, Rhode Island that features established and emerging filmmakers and their current documentary films, curated from film festivals around the world. Each week throughout the year, newportFILM hosts movie night across different locations around Newport; from parks to libraries, to mansions and local schools. The settings make it easy to see it’s not your typical movie night out.
The summer series are special and include live music, local food vendors, and a spirit of community that makes you feel like you’re in your own private screening room. All you need is a lawn chair, a cooler and an appetite for free popcorn!
One of our favorite screenings was Studio 54. With rare footage, a parade of colorful patrons and staff, and brutally honest interviews with Schrager himself, the movie is a fantastic behind the scenes look that takes you right into the heart and soul of what made the iconic club the definition of chic (and sometimes shame) in the height of the disco era. The theme of the night was played out with many patrons dressing up with their favorite disco flair. The location was the iconic Rosecliff Mansion, with sweeping views of Eastons Bay and a setting that would make anyone feel like a Gatsby; a truly memorable and beautiful night to sit and soak up the stars on and off the screen.
