Best Places to Grab a Coffee (and Go for an Island Walk)

Start your morning the Nantucket way—with a strong cup and a scenic stroll

There’s no such thing as a bad time of day on Nantucket. But if we had to pick our favorite? It would be just as the sun starts to rise—when the streets are still quiet, the boat basin is bathed in golden light, and the island feels like a secret waiting to be discovered.

One of my favorite things to do—especially when we’re lucky enough to be staying on-island—is to get up early, grab a coffee to go, and head out for a long, quiet walk. There’s something about those first few hours before the ferries dock and the bikes hit the road. It’s peaceful. Still. A little enchanted. It’s like I have the whole island to myself.

Whether you love a strong espresso, an iced latte, or just want an excuse to stroll somewhere beautiful, here are some of my favorite coffee + walk pairings on Nantucket.

1. Lemon Press + A Stroll Down Easy Street

Start with a matcha latte or cold brew and something from the breakfast counter (trust us on the breakfast burrito). From there, head toward Easy Street Basin. The light on the water here in the morning is unbeatable—and it’s just far enough off Main Street to feel like you’ve discovered a little secret.

2. Born & Bread + Old North Wharf

This tiny bakery tucked on Centre Street is a dream. Pick up an iced latte and a pastry (the galettes are legendary) and wander down to Old North Wharf. Historic boat houses, flower boxes, and views for days—it’s like stepping into a painting.

3. Handlebar Café + Brant Point Loop

This cozy café has a locals-first vibe, great espresso, and plenty of outdoor seating. Grab your drink and head north—follow the loop around to Brant Point Lighthouse. You’ll pass quaint homes, hydrangeas, and one of the most iconic views on the island.

4. Island Coffee Roasters + Steps Beach Path

If you’re staying near Cliff Road or heading toward the north shore, make a quick stop at Island Coffee Roasters. Their house-roasted beans hit the spot. Pair it with a walk down the steps to Steps Beach—sparkling water, rolling dunes, and a moment of peace.

5. The Hub + Main Street Morning Meander

More than just coffee, The Hub is a little slice of Nantucket nostalgia. Grab a cappuccino and browse the cards, magazines, and beach reads while you’re there. Then wander Main Street, Fair, and India—no rush, no rules, just that lovely early-morning quiet.

6. Roast’d General Store + Cisco Ramble

Tucked along Amelia Drive, Roast’d is worth the detour. Get your fuel—coffee, smoothie, maybe a pressed juice—and then take a relaxed stroll through the quieter part of town or continue on to Cisco Brewers for a post-coffee pint later in the day.

Bonus Tip

Pack your coffee in a reusable tumbler and hit one of the shell paths or the Bluff Walk in Sconset—you’ll feel like you’re in on the island’s best-kept secret.
