When a recent trip in New England had me shuttling between Boston and Maine, it seemed like the perfect excuse to finally check out the coastal town of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Portsmouth, settled in 1623, is the third-oldest city in the nation. With a rich history of fishing, shipping and brewing, the city has a quaint and historical feel. But there is new construction everywhere, leading you to believe this colonial town is ready for its 2020 closeup.
Visitors will find multiple waterside brick sidewalks to stroll, boutiques to browse and did we mention food? The city is teeming with a selection of restaurants, bars and cafes that would rival any metropolis twice the size.
The Hotel Portsmouth, just down the road from the center of town, is a perfect way to stay and play; it’s just close enough to downtown to be enjoyed by foot, but far enough that it’s a quiet and peaceful place to retreat after a long day of exploring.
Gracious and welcoming, the boutique property, one of many offered by Lark Hotels, offers all the amenities of a large hotel with the charm of a B&B. And much like the city itself, it is an impeccable combination of classic with a modern twist.
